About the Comicfestival

The Comicfestival Hamburg is a place where people come together: established artists and students, artists and fans, festival organizers and local residents—as well as people from different generations. It is shaped by student initiative, volunteer efforts, and a commitment to ensuring that local and international guests have a rewarding and inspiring experience in Hamburg.

That's why our festival is …

FREE

All events as part of the Comicfestival are free of charge. Comic art is for everyone—including those who otherwise have little or no access to culture.

FAIR

Within the limits of our capabilities as a volunteer-run festival, we are committed to sustainably supporting and raising awareness of the comic book culture, which remains in a precarious state. Artists should be fairly compensated for their work.

SUSTAINABLE

Supporting local emerging talent is a key priority for us. Since its inception, our festival has received significant support from students at the University of Applied Sciences (HAW). In return, we showcase their work in several exhibitions and actively connect the younger generation with other universities, established artists, and publishers—for example, through our “Publisher Speed Dating” event at the fair.

ORGANIZED LOCALLY

Our festival is distinguished by its use of storefronts and retail spaces as exhibition areas. Through the festival’s decentralized structure, we actively promote community-building in St. Pauli and Neustadt.

INTERNATIONALLY CONNECTED

Especially in times of national isolation, we actively seek out collaborations with other international festivals and artists. Our exhibitions bring fresh and unconventional perspectives to Hamburg and foster dialogue among artists, publishers, and the public.

INDEPENDENT

The program is curated by Hamburg-based artists, cultural practitioners, and students from the HAW community. We are in constant dialogue regarding the content presented. In doing so, we are expressly committed to supporting and bringing to light perspectives that have traditionally received less attention and are currently being marginalized once again. To maintain our independence in decision-making, we do not accept sponsorship and are funded primarily through public and private grants and donations.
